When Counselling A Person, The Most Important Question to Ask Is This!

What do you want in life? This I believe is the most important question to ask when you are playing counsellor to someone in personal trouble. or when you are counselling a patient who is  managing a health condition but whose lifestyle is making their illness worse.

(watch Video): If You Ever Find Yourself In A Medical Emergency Situation in Nigeria, Do you think You Would Survive?

The Nigerian health care system has a lot of lapses. And until you come face to face with the deficiencies in the system, you will not fully comprehend what I am saying.

This article is intended to raise awareness about the need for a more structured ambulance service and public hospital network across the country. However before going further, please watch the video below. It narrates how one woman lost her life supposedly because of our faulty health system.

Boo Hoo! Your Sad Story May Soon Become Irrelevant

I don’t keep up with the number of times I have failed. Those things just do not occur to me.

This Is Why You Need to Watch More Television.

I love lifestyle television. While I appreciate the work the guys at CNN and other news television networks do, I would rather spend my time with TV dramas and TV shows. I watch a lot of TV. I watch the good, the bad and trust me I watch the bizarre.

My point is that television is a part of our lives. The things we see change our view of the world. The reason I don’t watch news television is simply the fact that they pay so much attention to negative events.

Furthermore, News television are about facts and figures. The television I pay attention to are about expanding humanity.

The Oprah Winfrey Show:

Growing up, I learnt a lot watching Oprah on TV.

On the Oprah Winfrey Show:

I listened to Nelson Mandela talk about those 27 years he was locked away because he stood against apartheid in South Africa. That show thought be about Forgiveness.

I also listened to Matthew stepanek, a young boy who was living a full life despite being with a serious health condition. Matthew would have been 26 years old this year. At that time, I thought that all kids, were healthy, like I was. What moved me the most about Matthew was his desire to leave a strong legacy. He was a published author and peace ambassador.

But perhaps, my most memorable story on the Oprah Winfrey show was about Stacey Halprin.

Stacey used to be morbidly obese, and she narrated how people would verbally attack her for being the way she was. Whether she was just going for a walk or trying to grab something to eat, the verbal assaults were non-stop.

Her story thought me about bullying.

In one footage (actually, that's where I got the photo on the right from)

Stacy mentioned something remarkable about playing to your strengths:

“People ask me, Why do you use so much makeup. Why do you spend time trying to look good. And I tell them, because it is all I have. It is all I have”

I have been overweight all my life, and I know people are not very kind to fat people. It is the truth. The fat people that get serious attention have other things going on for them. They are either very smart, very rich, very influential or very something else.

Away from talk shows, I watch TV dramas. Most of them for the suspense, the thrills and their sound tracks.

From watching Dr. Grey (Grey’s Anatomy) try to save lives, in the most surreal circumstances, I have learnt to take my job as a pharmacist seriously.

From watching shows like How To Get Away With Murder and The Good Wife, I have fallen in love with the practice of law. I have even added words/terms like:

burden of proof
Pro bono publico
quid pro quo.
to my vocabulary.

I have also learnt few tips for  reviewing contracts.

I also have to mention, America’s Next Top Model, because that show inspired me to become a fashion stylist. And I have worked as one for the last five years.

So, I am making a case for TV. We are in a time  where there is so much emphasis on being productive, and squeezing the most out of 24 hours. However there should always be a place for television in our lives.

I have always been attracted to value centered TV programming, because I believe that visual media is one of the most effective ways to give instructions and influence people’s lives.

I don’t keep up with The Kardasians, I keep up with people like Shonda Rhimes and Oprah Winfrey, because they align with my definition of television. A medium for entertaining, for impacting values and for giving instructions.

If You Are going Through Hell, Keep going.

Add caption
I know that supporting others is what I am called to do, and my perfect world is a place where we support one another, and everyone is living their lives to the fullest. Of course, my life is far from perfect; very far, and I am dealing with issues (most of them, normal for a young adult starting life). Nevertheless, my problems should not hinder me from throwing my hands out to give someone a hug.

Every one passes through hell. The first thing you have do when your life is harder than it used to be, is to recognize that you are passing through hell. And I don’t mean the actual hell, this one is metaphorical.  You have to understand what it means to pass through such a terrible place.

This is what I have learnt. Focus on the fact that your Life Works

It is actually possible to believe that your life is perfect as it is right now, and that you lack nothing.  Rather than focusing on the lapses in your life, focus on the fact that your life works. The fact that your life is in motion.

Whatever the situation, humans are able to adapt and build a functioning system that ensures their survival. Even in the worst of circumstances, you must realize that you have a system in place. And your number one goal should never be perfection but constant improvement.

So You Are Killing People for Me to Eat Meat?

This question has been on my mind for the past few days. I cannot seem to wrap my head around the fact that Fulani Herdsmen would kill farmers so that their cattle can graze on farmlands.

From Being a Prostitute to being An Amazon Best Selling Author; Titi Ladette defied the odds!

My belief is that every experience a person goes through is important for building them and for defining them. Of course there are bad experiences and no body likes those. However I have come to understand that in those very negatives are opportunities for success.

Her real name is  Trina Cleveland and she is an American author, motivational speaker and poet.

She is now leading a meaningful life. But it was not always this blissful for this mother and grand mother.

I heard New York Times columnist, David Brooks talk about having our loves in order.

As a guest on the inspirational talk show, Super Soul Sunday, hosted by Oprah Winfrey, he talked about what he considers sin to be.
According to brooks, “we sin when we have our loves out of order”.
He explains that there should be a balance of all the things we love.

10 things you need to know right now.

1. You do not owe anyone an obligation to be pleasant to them. Of course you are a pleasant person but when people turn around and slap you in the face, you do not owe them your pleasantness.

When Life Speaks, Pay Attention.

We all get those gut feelings:

"something is not right with this guy"

"Stop being friends with that person"

"Watch the way you eat food prepared by other people"

What Would You Like To Change About Your Life?

This, I think, this a very powerful question. What I know for sure is that our unique problems are a part of our lives.

4 Ways to Overcome Mistreatment

It is impossible to avoid mistreatment or insult if you interact with other people. I hear people say, "but I am not like that, why then should other people disrespect me?".

Remain Authentic. Life Is Short!

I am listening to the Beatles' I am looking Through You. I just stumbled on the music online. And I like the song. I like the fact that, to me, it sounds original.

Don't Feel Sad Because You Are Alone.

Every time I write here, know that I write from a personal space, so, I know what it means to be lonely.  And I have come to accept that, and I hope that I can help you channel whatever emotions you feel, as a result, through a positive light.

Walk your way back to Power

Let me tell you. I am not perfect. In fact, I am probably not the best person to dish out self help advice. I know that people are looking for self help experts that appear very well packaged; that look prim and proper. But I am certainly not one of those guys.

This Is What I Have Learnt: You Must Learn From Your Experiences or else...

The first thing I ask myself after going through a negative experience is, "What did I learn". And then I begin to articulate all the lessons I got from that experience. And I believe that this is an exercise we have to do  because if we are not aware of the lessons an experience bears, we are going to go through that experience over and over again.
